What is a raw vegan diet?
A vegetarian diet includes predominantly plant based foods and many of the vegetarian dishes are cooked. It also allows the use of small portions of animal products such as dairy and eggs. However, a raw vegan diet allows only consumption of pure plant based foods that are not heated above a certain temperature (115 degrees Fahrenheit/46 degrees Celsius), thus preserving their natural nutrient profile and enzymatic status to the maximum.
What are the benefits of a raw vegan diet?
Eating a raw vegan diet brings a myriad of health benefits such as shedding excess fat, aiding the body's detoxification process, increasing mental clarity and vitality. Overall, there are four major health benefits of a raw vegan diet.
1. Effective Enzyme Protection
Our body requires enzymes to help break down the foods that we consume. While our body does produce its own enzymes, the most important source of enzyme comes from fresh, uncooked foods. When food is cooked above 110-120 degrees Fahrenheit, most of its natural enzymes such as protease, amylase and lipase are lost. A raw vegan diet preserves these enzymes hence aid in the digestion process which allows for maximum absorption of nutrients from our food consumption.
2. Great Nutrient Value
Cooking food creates a double whammy effect on nutrient absorption. Not only are the enzymes lacking to help break the food down, but the very nutrients contained within the foods are significantly reduced when they are heated to cooking temperature. In actual fact, most micronutrients and phytonutrients are best preserved on a raw vegan diet.
3. High Antioxidants
What goes on at a cellular level determines the biological ageing process of a person's physiology. A raw vegan diet is naturally abundant with foods containing high amounts of antioxidants and disease fighting phytonutrients which are paramount in helping prevent oxidative damage caused by the natural metabolic process in the body and other internal and external toxicity factors.
4. Optimal Immune Defense
Given the right condition and support our immune system is incredily efficient. This requires that we treat our body to proper nutrition and adequate work life balance. The problem with the modern lifestyle and diet is the prevalence of stress and we often suffer from poor food and lifestyle choices when we are under stress. This combination of stress and nutrient deficiency are detrimental to our immune defence. A raw vegan diet replenishes the all too important disease fighting nutrients and cofactors that help restore vitality to our life force and by doing so, improve our immunity.
